Shirking a popular wedding tradition led to Madison LeCroy’s favorite memory from day she said “I do” to forever with Brett Randle.

“I went against the rule of having a first look,” the Southern Charm star, 32, tells PEOPLE. “I wanted him to have that initial reaction of seeing me walk down the aisle. And that was probably my favorite moment. Just seeing his face and how happy he was meant everything to me.”

LeCroy announced her engagement to 37-year-old Randle, who she met at a bar in Arizona, in October 2021. They tied the knot at a Charleston, South Carolina, courthouse in November and followed up the courthouse wedding with an intimate ceremony in Mexico later that month.

The Bravo star remembers the moment Randle saw her in her white Reem Acra dress. “His eyes were a little watery, but thank goodness he wasn't crying, because I would've lost it,” she says. “I've never seen him cry.”

As LeCroy and Randle approach their first anniversary, the mom of 10-year-old son Hudson has started thinking about how they’ll celebrate.

“We [will] schedule that between work — it's been kind of wild,” LeCroy says. “It may not be as lavish as the world tour we went on for our honeymoon, but we'll do something.”

LeCroy and the firefighter honeymooned in Bali and Singapore and when they returned, the newlyweds held a wedding celebration in Charleston for their costars to attend. The party appeared on Thursday’s season 9 premiere of Southern Charm and ended with Taylor Ann Green and Craig Conover shouting at each other about him supposedly hiding Shep Rose’s cheating from Green, 28.

“I was hoping for it to actually stay classy during the whole event, but we know with this group something was going to happen,” LeCroy says. “I'm just thankful it didn't involve me, so all good.”

At the time of her wedding, LeCroy told PEOPLE that she and Randle chose Riviera Maya for their affair because they’d visited together previously.

“We kept it really small, no bridesmaids or groomsmen, just our nearest and dearest," she said of the nuptial, which took place at sunset in front of nearly 40 of their closest friends and family, including her son Hudson and LeCroy's dad, who walked her down the aisle.

LeCroy described the day as “super chill” and “relaxed.”

"We didn't want to have some elaborate wedding here in Charleston with 300 people. That just wasn't our vibe," she explained. "And if it wasn't for Hudson, we probably would have just eloped and [not done] a wedding."

The hairstylist didn’t even invite her Southern Charm costars.

"Other than Patricia [Altschul], I don't really think that anybody I was that close with at the time I was planning my wedding would really want to be there," LeCroy, who has also served as 82-year-old Altschul's hairstylist for years, said. "We just wanted it super-small and only attended by the people who are rooting for us."
