Mad Max Furiosa: release date, cast and everything you need to know
Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the best movies ever made, and that's the hill we're going to die on. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron made their post-apocalyptic debut in the fourth film of George Miller's series in 2015, and since then we've been clamouring for a follow-up.
Fury Road came out 30 years after the previous instalment, starring Mel Gibson. Though the wait was long, it was certainly worth it.
The last five years have been relatively quiet when it comes to Fury Road's sequel, until now. It has been announced that The New Mutants' Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast as Furiosa in the provisionally titled Furiosa (inspired, we know).
Though Tom Hardy said he was on board to return, as was Charlize Theron for her own Furiosa story, it doesn't seem like either will star in Furiosa.
Joining Taylor-Joy in the Fury Road prequel are feature Marvel's Chris Hemsworth and Watchmen actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Strictly speaking, Furiosa is being billed as a spin-off, though George Miller was always adamant that Fury Road was a 'reimagining', neither a sequel or reboot, which has allowed for greater creativity regarding the Wasteland world he created.
Speaking of the auteur, Miller himself will co-write, direct, and produce the spin-off. He already confirmed that every Fury Road character had a rich backstory, and now it seems like it's Furiosa's time to shine.
Deadline reported that the movie will "track the genesis of Furiosa before she teamed up with Max Rockatansky in Fury Road." Whether this means we'll see any of the surviving Vuvalini remains to be seen.
Miller was adamant about taking time between Fury Road and jumping into another Wasteland story. In 2019, he said: "It’s an interesting question, the idea of multi-tasking.
"I discuss this with other filmmakers and I think what happens to me is that when you’re working on one thing, and you get so distracted and focused on that one thing, it’s like a creative holiday to focus on the other one for a bit. It helps you achieve that objectivity, to look at the thing afresh each time and say, I thought I was doing this, but it doesn’t seem to be the case now."
Well, it's been five years since Mad Max: Fury Road debuted in cinemas which seems like a decent amount of time for a creative holiday. All we can say is that we're waiting with bated breath for whatever other news about the spin-off comes our way.
