The trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller Trap has arrived, giving a glimpse into Josh Hartnett’s performance as an unexpected serial killer. Watch the full clip below.

In Trap, Harnett plays a father who takes his teen daughter to a concert performed by pop star Lady Raven (played by the filmmaker’s daughter, Saleka Shyamalan). The film interweaves the story with Lady Raven’s performance, taking place in near-real time.

Beginning as a wholesome family experience, the trailer drastically shifts in tone when Hartnett’s character discovers the police have set up a trap (get it?) at the concert to capture a notorious serial killer called The Butcher. Seemingly giving away the film’s big twist, Harnett is revealed to be The Butcher.

Written and directed by Shyamalan, Trap also stars Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, and Allison Pill. It’s set to arrive in theaters on August 9th.

Speaking to TheWrap, Shyamalan explained why he decided to reveal Hartnett as the serial killer in the trailer. “You can’t hide it. It happens so early,” he said. “This is the fun of the movie. It’s being in that point-of-view.”

Trap is the first film to emerge from Shyamalan’s first-look deal with Warner Bros. and will be followed by The Watchers, an adaptation of A.M. Shine’s 2021 horror novel of the same name. The latter project will mark the feature directorial debut of another daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.

Shyamalan’s most recent film was last year’s Knock at the Cabin. If its ending left you scratching your head, our explainer has you covered.

Harnett is experiencing a career renaissance, thanks to a standout appearance in the most recent season of Black Mirror and his role as Nobel-winning nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence in Oppenheimer.
