Lupita Nyong'o's hairstylist is selling an $18 bottle of water for your hair — and it's not a gimmick

One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn as a woman with natural hair is that it’s OK to get my hair wet. While I’ve skipped out on swimming until I discovered a cap large enough to protect my curls from chlorine and sprinted in rain showers to protect my fresh salon ‘do, water is essential to maintaining healthy, hydrated curls. So when I opened a box that contained a sample of Vernon François‘s new $18 water for hair, I didn’t flinch one bit.
The celebrity hairstylist, who has worked his mane magic for Lupita Nyong’o, Solange Knowles, and Ava Duvernay, recently launched a second collection for his signature haircare line. New products include a leave-in conditioner, silk sleeping cap, and overnight hair oils. But the Mist~Nourishing Water is sure to be a game-changer, especially for kinky-haired women.
François tells me that the inspiration behind the water was a “eureka” moment. He explains, “My goal is always to make the kinky, curly woman’s life more seamless, and I know that she dampens her hair before styling. The idea of creating a healthy water, that is purest water boosted with added goodness, is so simple and highly effective. It sets the stage for the most successful styling.”
The Mist~Nourishing Water is obviously made with water and glycerin. But the liquid also contains an amino acid blend known as Prodew 500, which François says “work to protect and strengthen your hair making it stronger, healthier and it stops color fade, too.”
He also made sure to design the bottle as a non-aerosol spray to ensure that the particles are small and delicate, making for what François believes is better absorption into strands. “Hair looks fabulous when it’s well-moisturized, well-nourished, and the natural pattern of kinks and curls can shine because it’s not weighed down with heavy product,” he says.
So how exactly do you use the Mist~Nourishing Water? The professional recommends using it to lightly dampen dry hair before styling. He adds, “Section hair, hold [the bottle] about 30 centimeters away, and spray liberally all over your hair. One pump goes quite a long way.”
In the past, I’ve tried mixing up my own hair water, adding in a few drops of essential oils like lavender or peppermint. But what failed epically was the actual spray bottle I poured it all into. It would emit way too much water, soaking my strands and tacking on time I didn’t have to fix the mess. François has not only mastered the tool itself, but included the right ingredients to revive my Afro when it’s flattened after sleeping or moisturize my cornrows that I hide underneath wigs.
Now only if he’d make a travel size-friendly version that I could take everywhere and have good hair no matter where I go!
