Lupita Nyong'o Revealed Why She's Done Sharing Her Relationship Status With Fans

Lupita Nyong’o has learned that sometimes it’s better to keep parts of herself private. Social media has made celebrities more accessible than ever, but the Oscar winner discovered the good — and the bad — about sharing her personal life with her fans.

The 40-year-old actress opened up to NET-A-PORTER’s digital title PORTER about sharing her breakup with boyfriend Selema Masekela on Instagram. It seemed like a good idea at the time. “I was living in a lot of pain and heartbreak,” she explained. “I looked at the environment of my social media and thought I don’t want to be a part of this illusion that everything is always coming up roses. Surely there is a lesson for me to learn in this, and I just want to be real about it.”

Her followers probably appreciated her realness when she hinted that it was Masekela’s infidelity that ended their relationship. “There are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering,” she wrote in a lengthy Instagram post. “At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust… I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception.”

Nyong’o told PORTER that she wrote about her raw emotions at the time because she “felt sure about it.” However, it sounds like she’s reverting to her former policy: public relationship talk is off-limits. “That was very, very sage of me. I’m going back to those days, by the way,” she noted. That love-life shutdown will probably leave fans wondering if she’s dating Jodie Turner-Smith’s ex-husband, Joshua Jackson. In early December, they were seen holding hands while on a walk in Joshua Tree, California.

They were first spotted together in October on a group outing to a Janelle Monae concert. The event was slightly suspicious, coming on the heels of their recent breakups. However, it was their December trip to LA’s trendy Erewhon Market that raised everyone’s eyebrows — it seemed like a love match had indeed happened. But we won’t be hearing about it from Nyong’o, who mysteriously told the fashion site, “Our purpose in life is to love. And so you have to get back in it.” That sounds like an official “no comment.”
