Lupita Nyong'o Attends 2024 Oscars in a Meaningful Armani Gown Inspired by a Look She Wore a Decade Ago

The look nodded to another Oscars night for the star

Lupita Nyong'o was one of the glitziest guests at the 2024 Oscars — and she drew inspiration from her own style archives!

On Sunday, the 41-year-old actress — who was accompanied by her A Quiet Place: Day One costar Joseph Quinn — wore De Beers jewels and a periwinkle Armani Privé gown custom-made with lots of glitzy details (feathers! jewels! a plunging neckline!).

What we were most excited about, though, was the special meaning behind Nyong'o's dazzling ensemble.

According to E! correspondent Zanna Roberts Rassi, the presenter's icy ensemble is a nod to the fairytale light blue Prada gown she wore to the 2014 Oscars, when she won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 12 Years a Slave.

Nyong'o's stylist, Micaela, reminisced over the original gown, worn 10 years ago, on Instagram.

"This woman, this dress, and this moment completely changed the course of my career. There is so much to reflect on … so many behind the scenes moments and stories leading up to this day. From the rounds of mood boards, sketches, swatches, fittings, and process. It was a journey," Micaela wrote, concluding her message by thanking Nyong'o for giving her the opportunity to dress her.

Nyong'o's present-day glam also included a hairstyle that had "a lot of shine and texture" and highlighted Nyong'o's beauty, her hairstylist Vernon François shared in a press release.

François' goal: to "enhance her natural coils and ensure that her look remained flawless throughout" the night using his go-to Matrix products.

Nyong'o isn't afraid to take risks with her style, stepping out last year in a custom-made breastplate for the 2023 Tony Awards. Pakistani artist and fashion designer Misha Japanwala created the silver breastplate for Nyong'o by casting it and molding it from her body.

The following month, Nyong'o went for a head-to-toe pastel Chanel look for Paris Fashion Week. She paired a lavender tweed set — a vest embellished with silver buttons and a structured collar — with matching shorts.

Nyong'o's big night in Hollywood comes after a recent trip to Mexico with new boyfriend, Joshua Jackson. The actors were photographed in Puerto Vallarta as they celebrated Nyong'o's recent 41st birthday. Jackson, 45, and Nyong’o were first romantically linked in October 2023.

The 96th Oscars will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, March 10, at 7 p.m. ET.
