Lupe Fiasco has shared his plans to hijack the instrumentals to Andre 3000’s forthcoming solo debut album New Blue Sun, rap over them, and release them at a later date.

On Tuesday (Nov. 14), after the OutKast member suddenly announced that project would be releasing on Friday (Nov. 17), Lupe Fiasco took to X to make the declaration, sharing a clip of dancers performing a routine to Michael Jackson’s classic 1982 hit “Billie Jean.” “Gonna rap all over that 3stacks album and put it in the time capsule for future generations,” the esteemed lyricist wrote, leaving some to wonder whether the rapper was joking or serious about his intent.

Sharing the album’s release date and presumed cover art on his Instagram account, news of Andre 3000 returning with his first full-length project in nearly two decades left fans in a mix of shock and elation. However, many of those reactions turned into bewilderment and disappointment upon the rap legend’s announcement that not only would he be releasing his long-awaited debut, but that it would be devoid of any rapping and only consist of flute compositions.

Andre Benjamin of “Dispatches from Elsewhere” speaks during the AMC segment of the 2020 Winter TCA Press Tour at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena on January 16, 2020 in Pasadena, California.

“I don’t want to troll people,” the Atlanta native told NPR earlier this week. “I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! And you play it and like, Oh man, no verses. So even actually on the packaging, you’ll see it says, ‘Warning: no bars.’ It’s letting you know what it is off the top. But also, I love rap music because it was a part of my youth. So I would love to be out here with everybody rapping, because it’s almost like fun and being on the playground.”

He continued, giving context to what listeners can expect from the album. “So the title, ‘I Really Wanted To Make A Rap Album, But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time’ [is] because this album is about wind and breathing. In that way, it is true. It is literally blowing me this way and I’m blowing flutes and I’m blowing digital instruments.”

Andre 3000 last released a full-length album as a member of OutKast, with sixth studio album Idlewild dropping in 2006.
