Luke Bryan Talks ‘Play It Again’ Success, Writing Process for ‘Spring Break’ EPs at Billboard Music Awards: Watch

During rehearsals for his performance at the Billboard Music Awards, country star Luke Bryan chatted about the success of his hit single “Play It Again.”

“The fact that ‘Play It Again’ has been rocking and at the top of the charts is pretty special,” Bryan told Billboard, describing the track as a “fun little love story.”

“From the time the album came out — ‘Crash My Party’ — a lot of the fans were really talking about it, and it was always something that we felt had to be a single, just by all the chatter on all the socials and people loving it,” he said.

Bryan is a finalist in six categories this year, more than any other country act. His nominations include Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Country Album and Top Country Song twice.

Bryan also discussed his approach to writing his long-running “Spring Break” EP series.

“We always record our ‘Spring Break’ albums like the weekend of february. We kind of have our holiday time, and after New Year’s we start writing,” the singer said. “We’ve put some ballads on ‘Spring Break’ so it’s not always about shotguns and beers the whole time. We want to write eight or 10 songs for it, pick the best five or six and make a fun album.”

The country artist says his main priority is that fans have fun at his live shows.

“When I was 16 or 17 years old playing bars, I wanted everyone in those bars having a great time, so I wouldn’t play 10 ballads in a row. That’s the formula I always thought would work for me,” he said. “I want people to know that the Luke Bryan brand is to come to the show and have a great night with your friends and party a little bit.”
