Luis Gerardo Méndez To Direct & Star In Boyband Comeback Movie ‘Technoboys’ For Netflix

EXCLUSIVE: Luis Gerardo Méndez will be in front of and behind the camera in Technoboys, a Netflix movie about a boyband on the comeback trail.

Hailing from Netflix Mexico, the Spanish-language film follows the titular band two decades after they topped the charts. Now they are back to reclaim their pop throne, but the music world has changed and they have to battle rival groups and make it all over again in a world they barely understand. Meanwhile, the lead singer of the Technoboys has a hidden reasons for wanting to return to the music scene. The film will bow on Netflix later this year.

Méndez will play the band’s lead singer, Alan, and co-directs Technoboys alongside Gerardo Gatica. The pair’s production company, Cine Vaquero, is making the movie, alongside Panorama and Bengala. Alexandro Aldrete penned the script.

The Noble Family, Murder Mystery, Narcos: Mexico, Netflix’s first Spanish-language series Club De Cuervos and Peacock’s The Resort are among Méndez’ long list of film and TV credits. The actor, producer — and now movie director — said he has long wanted to step behind the camera in a feature.

“I was always very open with my directors about that desire to direct, and they were all incredibly generous over the years in sharing their knowledge,” he said. “Co-directing with my partner at Cine Vaquero, Gerardo Gatica, has been one of the most enriching exercises of my life. Filmmaking is a collaboration, and having a friend and partner in crime in the chair next to you makes the process less lonely and leads you to make thoughtful decisions with another depth.”

Méndez directed episodes of Club de Cuervos and said filling the director’s chair in a feature was a natural next step. “From the first time I read Technoboys I knew I could tell this story and that we had the perfect team to bring it to the screen.”

Exec producers on the project are Méndez, Aldrete, Gabriel Nuncio and Ximena Calvo. The producers are Pablo Zimbrón and Gatica.

“It took several years dreaming and developing this story hand in hand with Alexandro Aldrete and Gabriel Nuncio and I could not be more excited or more grateful to the wonderful team at Netflix for having trusted us to bring this film to millions of people around the world and, of course, to my partner, friend, co-director, accomplice, Luis Gerardo Méndez, for joining this adventure and making this film his, in front of and behind the cameras,” Gatica said.

Next up for Méndez is a role in Skincare, the Austin Peters film that will also star Elizabeth Banks, Nathan Fillion and Lewis Pullman. He also recently completed filming on Amazon limited series Stanley. Méndez is represented by UTA, GoodManagement, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.

Technoboys will be available on Netflix worldwide.
