Ludacris broke down some of his biggest hits in a new interview aired at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards.
In the sit-down with VIBE’s editor-in-chief Datwon Thomas for Billboard‘s “Hip-Hop Through the Charts” segment, the Atlanta representative not only discussed his iconic verses but also what the genre means to him beyond his career. The Grammy Award-winning musician’s resume includes five No.1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, 56 Hot 100 charted singles, and 18 different top 10 Hot 100 records.
“Hip-Hop is everything to me,” explained the 46-year-old rapper. “It’s how we talk, it’s how we dress it’s how we walk. Everything I do is to give back to the culture that gave me.”
The conversation included stories behind his solo fan-favorites and memorable guest features like working on “Yeah” with Lil Jon and Usher. The 2004 party-ready track landed at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart where it remained for 12 consecutive weeks.
“Soon as Lil Jon sent me the record, I was like, ‘This is out of here’ before I even got my verse on there. That’s why you see me at the beginning of the record, a verse, and at the end,” detailed the “Stand Up” performer. “‘Take that and rewind it back.’ I’m trying to get on as many parts of the record as possible. I knew what it was. It’s crossed three generations…That’s when you have the hit record of a lifetime.”
Ludacris also reflected on other songs including “Money Maker” featuring Pharrell, “Runaway Love” featuring Mary J. Blige, and more. Watch the full interview above.
