Hip-Hop is competitive by nature and to be the best, one has to beat the best. Ludacris recently claimed that he could out-rap JAY-Z if both were given two hours to write a verse.

The Atlanta rapper joined Cam Newton’s Funky Friday podcast and was posed with an interesting question: if he and Hov were put in the same room and tasked to write a verse, whose would be better? “A verse? I would have to say I would win on that one,” Luda said.

The former NFL MVP was in disbelief. “Hov?!” he exclaimed. The “Stand Up” rapper stood by his claim but gave his flowers to the Brooklyn rapper. “I mean that’s a strong statement to say that because Hov is definitely one of my favorites as well,” he said. “Verses? Man, I’m just going to go in and… Metaphor and style. In terms of flow, I’m going to kill that sh*t.”

Ludacris maintained his confidence throughout his explanation but reiterated his respect and acknowledgment of JAY-Z’s talent. “And it’s not to say that Hov is not going to kill that sh*t,” he said. “But, I’m like when you say sh*t like that and it puts me in a category of, ‘Oh sh*t, I’m going against Hov?’ I got to [go]. Like every f**king word, every line, every style, every flow, every metaphor — I got to go!”

The 46-year-old rapper reminded Cam Newton and the viewers that he already had a song with the 4:44 rapper. “I Do It For Hip-Hop” featuring the Roc Nation leader and Nas appeared on his 2008 album Theater Of The Mind. “You gotta go back and listen,” he said. “So dope. It just made me think of that.”

Luda and Newton also discussed the current state of Hip-Hop. “I think the competition in the rapping space, now, I wouldn’t say it’s healthy,” the former Carolina Panthers quarterback said. Luda followed up with, “It’s about to be, though. You see what’s going on. It’s reinvigorated.”

Ludacris and Cam Newton both believed that Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s rap beef was simply competitive, despite how personal both rappers got.

“I think where you’re coming from, it’s a competition. Like, rapping is an art. Rapping is a sport,” Cam said. “I know how some would say, ‘Okay, cool. But, I got something to say too. And I’mma make you think a little harder. I’mma make you Rap Genius my sh*t, ’cause you may have missed it.’ Rappers, now, it can get dangerous for no reason. Like, don’t put me on the rap song, you going to end up on a [T-shirt].”

Fortunately, Drizzy and K. Dot’s beef has not left wax, though a shooting did take place at the Toronto rapper’s home right around when their feud peaked. The police have yet to identify a suspect or whether or not the shooting had anything to do with his tension with Lamar, Future, Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, Rick Ross, or A$AP Rocky. A security guard suffered gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital.
