Lucy Liu's son, Rockwell Lloyd Liu, helps her to be present.

The Charlie's Angels actress welcomed her first and only child through surrogacy in August 2015. Rockwell has been along for the ride ever since, visiting his mom on set and supporting her as she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019.

Lucy has said that she and Rockwell bond over conversations at the kitchen table, ukulele lessons and trips to different cultural institutions in New York City.

“Being a mother makes my world so colorful,” the SAG award winner wrote on Instagram in 2022. “My son opens my eyes to the beauty of being present every day - Nature in its purest form.”

While Rockwell made her a mother, Lucy has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2004, working with the humanitarian aid agency to help children all over the world. She’s credited her passion for this work to her experience as the daughter of two Chinese immigrants.

Since expanding her own family, Lucy has opened up about her relationship with Rockwell. "Having him know that this is home, and I'm home, is really a nice feeling," she told Women's Health in 2021.

Here’s everything to know about Lucy Liu’s son, Rockwell Lloyd Liu.

He was born in 2015

Rockwell was born via surrogacy on Aug. 27, 2015.

“Introducing the new little man in my life, my son Rockwell Lloyd Liu,” Lucy wrote on Instagram alongside a black-and-white photo of her holding him.

Several months after his birth, she opened up about her decision to have him with the help of a surrogate.

“It just seemed like the right option for me because I was working and I didn’t know when I was going to be able to stop,” the Elementary star told PEOPLE in 2016. “I decided that was probably the best solution for me, and it turned out to be great.”

Most recently, she told The Cut that she didn’t overthink the process, or even parenting in general before welcoming Rockwell.

"I didn't have a plan. I just thought, 'I want to change the conversation a little bit,' " Lucy said in 2023, adding that she didn’t want to keep speaking about work projects when people asked her what was next.

She continued, "I didn't mull it over too much. I didn't do a lot of research, I just pulled the trigger. A lot of people read books about parenting. I didn't do any of that. I was like, 'When the child is here, I'm just going to figure it out.' "

The Set It Up lead has also shared about her journey as a single parent. “I think maybe it’s easier in some ways if you’re a single mom,” she told Today in 2022. “You don’t have to deal with someone else’s opinion. And honestly, the other parent can be a toddler more than the child.”

Lucy says being a mom is "a magical experience"

The actress was sentimental as she celebrated her son’s first birthday in 2016.

“This has been the most incredible year of new adventures and endless fun,” she wrote in a birthday post on social media, picturing Rockwell in a party hat at the Bronx Zoo. “Giant thanks for everyone’s generosity.”

Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of the milestone, Lucy shared that she was surprised at the speed of Rockwell's growth.

“I didn’t realize how quickly babies progress,” she said. “Very basic things that you just take for granted. They’re just this little lump of flesh, and then all the sudden they’re turning around, they’re observing you and they’re smiling and they’re interacting. It’s a magical experience.”

For Rockwell’s fifth birthday in August 2020, Lucy posted a sweet message about her son on Instagram.

“My darling son turned 5 yesterday,” she wrote beside a shot of her standing next to Rockwell while he blew out his birthday cake candles. “He is a rainbow of light and his energy is pure magic.”

He is growing up in N.Y.C.

While Lucy knew some people wouldn’t understand her reasoning, she insisted on raising Rockwell in the Big Apple.

"I definitely wanted to raise a kid in New York," the Queens-born actress told The Cut. "People will say, 'It's not convenient, you don't even have a car,' but this way, they're going to see all the things."

According to the Kill Bill cast member, her son being out and about with her would benefit him greatly.

"You're going to show them what's safe and what's not, and they're going to understand that through experience," she added. "It's hard to build common sense when you're in a car all the time. They're going to smell the smells."

Rockwell is no stranger to all of the culture N.Y.C. has to offer: he rides the subway with Lucy, and visits places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Bronx Zoo.

Speaking to Today in 2022, Lucy revealed the unlikely inspiration for her son’s name.

“I was on location and Rockwell was the name of a store. At the time, I remember thinking, ‘That’s a really great name,’ and I kept it in the back of my mind," she said.

“I know a lot of people are like, ‘Oh, that’s a surname.’ But I think sometimes surnames are stronger than first names,” Lucy added.

Despite his name lending itself to the nickname “Rocky,” the actress told the outlet that he doesn’t go by that or any other nickname yet.

“When he was 4, he corrected somebody. He said, ‘My name is Rockwell,’ ” she said. “But I’m sure by the time he’s in high school, people will be calling him all kinds of names.”

Lucy and Rockwell share a few traditions, but one of their favorites is celebrating Lunar New Year.

In February 2021, the mom of one shared a picture of a wide-smiling Rockwell wearing a red and gold Tang suit.

“Welcoming in the Year of the Metal Ox with open arms and hearts! 💛 🎇 #happylunarnewyear,” she captioned the Instagram post.

A year later, she posted a photo of herself with Rockwell, smiling again, but this time, he was missing one of his front teeth.

“Happy Lunar New Year - We hope you find joy and meaning in all that you do this year of the Tiger,” Lucy wrote. “May twenty twenty tooth be a great year for growth and change! 🐅🦷💕."

He’s best friends with their dog

Since he was a baby, Rockwell has had a best friend in their family dog, Apple.

The two quickly bonded upon their introduction because the chocolate lab immediately wanted to take care of the new addition to the family.

“She’s really gentle,” Lucy told PEOPLE in 2016. “She’s protective, too. She’ll sit between him and whoever else comes in just to make sure they don’t step on him. It’s really beautiful to see how they interact."
