Lubbock Martin Luther King council honors individuals of distinction, civil rights leader

The Martin Luther King Commemorative Council of Lubbock honored individuals of distinction and celebrated the late civil lights leader during four days of events leading up to Monday's federal holiday.

The events included the annual Individuals of Distinction Award Banquet on Friday, the Youth, Young Adult, College and Career program on Saturday, citywide service Sunday and gospel night on Monday. All events were hosted in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, with the celebrations Saturday-Monday featuring the MLK Youth Mass Choir consisting of nearly 50 people who have spent the preceding weeks practicing for the annual performances.

The Speaker for the Individuals of Distinction Award Banquet, Angela Love-Jackson, shared a message of encouragement to keep standing and continue to pull each other up for success, according to the council.

The following individuals and organizations were recognized at this year's banquet: Pastor of the Year: Pastor Kenneth Jackson, New Light Baptist Church; Educator of the Year, Richard Baumgartner, Rise Academy; Business of the Year, Ricky Sherfield, Real Deal Designs; Community Involvement, Catholic Charities Diocese of Lubbock; Athletic Award, Ernes Mims, Coronado High School; and Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, Officer William Davis, Lubbock Police Department.
