Wonderland brings blues to Cactus stage

Texas Blues Queen Carolyn Wonderland is set to take the stage at the Cactus Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15.

Wonderland exhibits the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet. She hits the stage with an unmatched presence, a true legend in her time. She’d grown up the child of a singer in a band and began playing her mother’s vintage Martin guitar when other girls were dressing dolls. She’d gone from being the teenage toast of her hometown Houston to sleeping in her van in Austin amid heaps of critical acclaim for excellent recordings.

Along with the guitar and the multitude of other instruments she learned to play – trumpet, accordion, piano, mandolin, lap steel – Wonderland’s ability to whistle remains most unusual. Whistling is a uniquely vocal art seldom invoked in modern music, yet it’s among the most spectacular talents the human voice possesses.

Tickets for this concert $20 in advance for all floor and standard balcony seats, $25 the day of the show; and $40 for balcony box seats in advance or $50 the day of the show (concessions included).

Morrow brings 25th anniversary tour to Cactus

Cory Morrow brings his Man That I've Been 25th anniversary tour to the Cactus Theater at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10.

Morrow didn’t become a Texas legend by being quiet. He sings about strippers and Jesus with equal fervor. While this dichotomy may leave those on either side of the moral equator perplexed - the answer is actually very simple. Cory is beautifully and uncomfortably transparent.

From the beer-soaked, cocaine-laden days of his early career - to today’s more sober and spiritual leg of the journey - one thing about Morrow has never changed: as goes Cory’s life, goes Cory’s songs. He's now celebrating 25 years as a mainstay and survivor in the Texas Country scene - and this show at the Cactus Theater will encapsulate the twists and turns of the musician and the muse over this quarter century.

Tickets for this show are: floor rows A-D, $30 in advance and $35 the day of the show; remainder of floor, rows E-M, $25 in advance and $30 the day of the show; standard balcony, $20 in advance and $25 the day of the show; and limited box seats, $50 in advance and $55 the day of the show.

TTU series features The Queen's Cartoonists

The Texas Tech University Presidential Lecture Series presents The Queen's Cartoonists at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the Allen Theatre.

The Queen’s Cartoonists perform music from cartoons! Pulling from over 100 years of animation, TQC’s performances are perfectly synchronized to the films projected on stage. The band matches the energy of the cartoons, leading the audience through a world of virtuosic musicianship, multi-instrumental mayhem, and comedy.

Projections of animated films dazzle the audience, while the band re-creates original soundtracks note-for-note, or writes their own fresh compositions to modern pieces, all the while breathing new life into two uniquely American forms of art: jazz and animation. Tying everything together is the TQC brand of comedy - anecdotes about the cartoons and their composers, stream-of-consciousness humor, and elements of a musical circus.

Watch your favorite classic cartoon characters interact with the musicians on stage, and expect the unexpected from the Golden Age of Animation, cult cartoon classics, and modern animated films. Inspired by the cross-roads of jazz, classical music, and cartoons, TQC features Jazz Age composers like Carl Stalling, Raymond Scott, and Duke Ellington, alongside classical giants Mozart, Rossini, and R. Strauss (to name just a few).

Tickets for this show are $17 each and available online at selectaseatlubbock.com or by contacting the Select a Seat Box Office at (806) 770-2000 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
