Classic Cinema features 'Mary Poppins'

Cactus Theater's Classic Cinema features 1964's "Mary Poppins" at 2:30 and again at 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22.

"Mary Poppins" is an American musical fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by Walt Disney, with songs written and composed by the Sherman Brothers. The screenplay is by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, based on P. L. Travers' book series "Mary Poppins".

The film, which combines live-action and animation, stars Julie Andrews in her feature film debut as Mary Poppins, who visits a dysfunctional family in London and employs her unique brand of lifestyle to improve the family's dynamic. Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson and Glynis Johns are featured in supporting roles.

LCT presents 'Kinky Boots'

Lubbock Community Theater presents "Kinky Boots" May 24-June 2 at its theater, 3101 35th St.

Based on a book by Harvey Fiersten and music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, the production tells the story of Charlie Price, who has reluctantly inherited his father’s shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair find that they have more in common than they realized… and discover that when you change your mind, you can change your whole world.

Directed for LCT by Jillian Jhohnstone, the production is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, May 24 and 31; 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, May 25 and June 1; and 2:30 p.m. Sundays, May 36 and June 2.

Caldwell Collective performs hits of 70s, 80s

Caldwell Entertainment features part two of its tribute to the top 10 bands of the 70s and 80s at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Cactus Theater.

The Caldwell Collective is back for part two after the initial show in February.

See the Caldwell Collective perform different hits from the Eagles, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, ZZ Top, Whitesnake and Foreigner.

Caldwell Entertainment presents a tribute to Guns 'n' Roses, Def Leppard and White Snake at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 31, at the historic Cactus Theater.

Due to popular demand, Caldwell Entertainment is back with a tribute to these three legendary rock groups.

From “Sweet Child O’ Mine” to “Here I Go Again”, you will be on your feet all night long. Cactus favorites Brandon Gwinn, Jason Fellers, Kassidy King, Jeff McCreight and special guests will be backed by the immensely talented Caldwell Collective band for a night of incredible music.

West Texas Comic Con setr for June 1-2

West Texas Comic Con, is the largest comic convention in West Texas, is set for June 1 and 2 in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

With the same goal in mind, to renew the comic con experience for fans and vendors to be fun, memorable, and exciting, the convention aims to unite the elite of the pop culture industry under one roof.

The Edge presents 'The Mountaintop'

The Edge Theatre has announced performances for its 2024 Juneteenth encore presentation of Katori Hall's "The Mountaintop."

"The Mountaintop" is a fictional story based on what "might have been" on Dr. King's last night before his assassination. He has conversations with a young maid, Camae, who brings him coffee and keeps him company through the night. The story delves into Dr. King's more human side and shows that he is just a man.

Performances will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 13, 14, and 15 at The First Unitarian Universalist of Lubbock, 2801 42nd St., Lubbock.

Curtain is 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.

The show runs approximately 100 minutes and is recommended for ages 12 and up (adult situations and subject matter, profanity).

The Flaming Lips coming to Hub City
