Luann de Lesseps gets honest about alcoholism: 'I can't be like more normal people and have a glass or two of wine'

Last year around Christmas, Real Housewives of New York City star Luann de Lesseps made headlines with a drunken arrest in which she threatened to kill a police officer.

After that, de Lesseps checked into rehab but later relapsed due to stress stemming from her ex suing her. On Tuesday, she visited Megyn Kelly Today and explained that she fell off the wagon particularly hard one night.

“[My friend] goes, ‘I love making watermelon martinis’ and I said, ‘I’m in,’” said de Lesseps. “I had two or three of those, then I had I think two bottles of rosé by myself, and then I had probably a six-pack of beer.”

De Lesseps spoke frankly about her alcoholism, telling Kelly, “I feel like I’m almost allergic to alcohol. I can’t be like most normal people and have a glass or two of wine. I’ll drink the whole bottle and then I’m looking, ‘Where can I get another bottle?’”

De Lesseps finished her second stint of rehab only 10 days ago and shared with Kelly her newfound view on sobriety. “I take it day by day,” she said. “I’m going to be 30 days sober tomorrow.”

The season finale of the Real Housewives of New York City airs Wednesday, and while the franchise is known for it’s boozy drama-filled conflicts, de Lesseps said that sobriety is not holding her back.

“Who knew that you could have a good time going out to dinner without having cocktails?” she said. “I rediscovered that I can enjoy myself.”
