LSU vs. John Chavis lawsuit reportedly dismissed with settlement coming
The John Chavis vs. LSU saga that dates back to February 2015 has reportedly come to an end.
Chavis, the former LSU defensive coordinator who left the school to take the same job at Texas A&M, and his former employer were involved in a legal battle over a buyout LSU claimed the coached owed it. However, the lawsuit was dismissed Friday, according to the Baton Rouge Advocate, with a settlement just around the corner.
LSU maintained that Chavis owed his $400,000 buyout for breaking from his contract early to take the A&M job. However, Chavis said he did not leave LSU prior to Feb. 1, 2015, the buyout end date. Specifically, Chavis has claimed he gave his 30-day notice to leave LSU on Jan. 5, meaning his last official day as an employee was Feb. 4. If he left after Jan. 31, he would not owe LSU the buyout. Chavis also claimed LSU owed him in excess of $200,000 in unpaid vacation, plus money for other incentives.
After years of back-and-forth in the legal system, a settlement has reportedly been reached.
The Advocate reported last week that the two parties were working towards a settlement, something that’s likely been reached given the dismissal filing. Details on a settlement were not known. Attorneys involved in the suit either did not responded to messages for comment or declined comment Monday.
The two parties filed a joint motion to dismiss the lawsuit last week. It was signed by a judge Friday.
Chavis spent six seasons at LSU under Les Miles before leaving after the 2014 season to join the staff of Kevin Sumlin at A&M. He is now in his third season with the Aggies, who improved to 3-1 with an overtime win over Arkansas on Saturday.
