AUBURN, Ala – LSU cornerback Sevyn Banks suffered a serious injury on the opening kickoff against Auburn on Saturday.

Banks went in to make a tackle headfirst on the opening kick and did not move after making contact with Auburn kick returner Keionte Scott.

After the hit, Banks was loaded onto a stretcher. LSU was handed a 15-yard penalty after the play after a video review determined that Banks' hit was worthy of a targeting infringement.

According to the ESPN broadcast, Banks was responsive as he was being lifted onto the medical cart. He is also being sent to East Alabama Medical Center.

Through LSU officials, the broadcast also confirmed that Banks had movement in his extremities.

At halftime, LSU announced that Banks was cleared to leave the hospital and return to Jordan-Hare Stadium with team doctors.

LSU coach Brian Kelly said Banks suffered a neck injury and added: "We’re very encouraged.”

“There’s no words to describe how we felt when he was laying there on the field,” Josh Williams said.

Saturday was Banks' second appearance for LSU this season after debuting in last week's game against New Mexico.
