Love to Hate Her Yet? Meet the Other Woman of 'Gone Girl,' Emily Ratajkowski
Perhaps the biggest twist in the Gillian Flynn novel Gone Girl is when protagonist Nick Dunne’s mistress is revealed. In anticipation of the Gone Girl movie, we’re revealing her now – in every sense of the word! Here’s model-turned-actress Emily Ratajkowski as she appears in the pages of GQ's July issue, wearing little except bikini bottoms and strategically placed sand. She’ll make her film debut in Gone Girl, but you’ve actually seen her onscreen before.
Ratajkowski is one of the three topless women who pranced through Robin Thicke’s scandalous “Blurred Lines” video last summer. (Don’t see it? Picture her mouthing the word “meow.”) Unbeknownst to the California native, that video would become her screen test for director David Fincher’s highly anticipated thriller. None other than Ben Affleck, who plays Nick, suggested Ratajkowski for the part of Andie.
“I was talking with Ben, and what I wanted for the Andie role was someone who could be incredibly divisive among men and women in the audience,” Fincher told GQ. “We needed somebody where, at the moment she appears, the women are going, ‘That is unconscionable and despicable.’ And you also have the men going, ‘Yes, but…’ And so Ben said, ‘Yeah, like the girl in the “Blurred Lines” video.’”
Before long, Ratajkowski had been cast in a role requiring “several dozen takes” of make-out sessions with Affleck. Fincher described 23-year-old Ratajkowski as “incredibly mature,” unwilling to coast on her newfound stardom. The professionalism may have come from years of modeling, starting as a teenager. She told GQ that she dropped out of college after one year to model full-time, taking jobs including a bikini-clad Carl’s Jr. commercial. Things moved quickly after that: She made the “Blurred Lines” video in 2013, which led to the Gone Girl role, which led to a part in the upcoming Entourage movie.
Starring in a book-to-movie adaptation suits Ratajkowski, a professor’s daughter who reads voraciously and is enough of a cinephile to compare Blue Jasmine to other Woody Allen films. She’s looking forward to the day when people know her from something other than a music video – and lucky for her, she only has to wait a few more months.
