‘Love Fraud’ is the story of romance and deceit at the hands of a con man

In the four-part true crime docuseries “Love Fraud” co-directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady bring together some of the women who were deceived and robbed by Richard Scott Smith. Smith is a serial con man and romance scammer, who has been preying on women for 20 years. The filmmakers discovered Smith’s story by accident. “Our team found the blog where a lot of women who had been wronged by Richard Scott Smith gathered,” Ewing tells Yahoo Entertainment. Sabrina, one of Smith’s victims, decided to tell her story as a form of therapy and revenge. She reveals he stole $100,000 from her. “I wasn’t giving him money,” Sabrina says, “He was just signing my name on things.” The way Smith’s scam would work is he would marry women, forge their names and steal what he could. “Once you’re married it’s very, very hard to prove that this person stole from you,” Grady explains. Sabrina says she had to file for bankruptcy and “lost everything.”
