“Love Is Blind”'s Johnny says he and Amy did discuss condoms in birth control conversations

"We wanted to explore essentially every avenue we can go down. Condoms [were] definitely part of the conversation."

Warning: This article contains spoilers about Love Is Blind season 6 episodes 1-9.

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes financial stability, and then comes a baby in a baby carriage. At least, that's what Love Is Blind season 6 cast member Johnny McIntyre wants. But the topic of birth control to ensure that an unplanned pregnancy doesn't happen early has been a major issue for him and his onscreen fiancée Amy Cortés.

Johnny and Amy

In the latest batch of episodes, Johnny and Amy encountered their first real conflict after their post-engagement vacation in the Dominican Republic. As they moved in together, it was revealed that they hadn't had sex yet because Amy is not on birth control and Johnny didn't want to risk an unplanned pregnancy before they were financially and emotionally ready to become parents. In their multiple onscreen conversations, Amy said she had never been on birth control pills, and they discussed the possibility that Johnny could get a vasectomy. However, in all of their discussions, the word "condom" is never spoken — but Johnny says that just wasn't shown.

"It definitely was [discussed]," Johnny tells EW. "We wanted to explore essentially every avenue we can go down. Condoms [were] definitely part of the conversation. That's a big one. I really think that it was taken out of context a little bit, because ultimately, the whole reason why we started talking about this in the first place was because I didn't want to have kids right away. I wanted to really spend a lot of time getting to know Amy first and building that relationship before we started talking about bringing kids into the mix, because I didn't want it to feel rushed or we weren't there as a couple yet."

While other season 6 couples were dealing with lies, potential cheating scandals, love triangles, and other insurmountable issues, Johnny says that figuring out birth control was the defining obstacle in his relationship with Amy.

"Every couple has hiccups or things they talk about that might not be favored towards one or the other, but I feel like that was really our biggest thing," he says. "That was a conversation that we had probably over the course of a week and a half, and it was on-camera and also off-camera. We had to decide, 'They already know this is going to be a big part of our narrative. What do we actually want the world to know vs. what do we want to really talk about openly and honestly behind the scenes? Let's actually make sure we're coming to a good conclusion with this.'"

New episodes of Love Is Blind season 6 premiere Wednesdays, with the season 6 reunion premiering Wednesday, March 13, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Netflix.
