SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the much-anticipated sequel to the “Planet of the Apes” franchise, is entering theaters nationwide this week.

In Kingdom, we are sent centuries in the future from the previous film, “War of the Planet of the Apes,” and are introduced to a handful of new characters. This is a continuation of the previous three films, but also pays homage to the original 1968 classic.

Patrick Beatty, ABC4’s film critic and celebrity interviewer, sat down with the director of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and the popular “Maze Runner” films Wes Ball, and explored the world he’s built around a new era of the Planet of the Apes.

Check out the video above for a conversation with him about his love of the original and new Apes films, working with Weta Digital to bring the motion capture to life, the looming ghost of Ceasar, and if there could be a new trilogy.
