US actor John Malkovich celebrated a successful German premiere of the international production "In The Solitude Of Cotton Fields" at the sold-out Thalia Theatre inn Hamburg on Saturday, receiving standing ovations and cheers.

Together with Lithuanian actress Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė, the Hollywood star portrayed an encounter between two people at twilight in the work by French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès (1948-89).

In a menacing and mysterious atmosphere, the two characters negotiate themes such as desire and guilt, seducing and being seduced, buying and selling.

The production by Russian director Timofey Kulyabin, a co-production with the Dailes Theatre Latvia, was first shown in the Latvian capital Riga in March. A total of four performances are on the programme in Hamburg.

Malkovich had already made a major appearance in Bremen this month: He was honoured there at the film festival with the "Golden Pug" award - for his multi-layered work.
