Los Tucanes de Tijuana will perform March 24 at Topeka's Stormont Vail Events Center

Leaders of Stormont Vail Events Center, Visit Topeka and the city of Topeka on Tuesday announced the booking of its first Spanish recording band, Los Tucanes de Tijuana.

Stormont Vail Events Center manager Kellen Seitz said bringing the band to Topeka was needed.

"I think our realization and understanding that the Latin community in Topeka and Shawnee County has only continued to grow, and we don't feel like their culture and their entertainment value has been represented well enough in the marketplace," Seitz told The Capital-Journal. "So, we found this as an opportunity to celebrate them and support them and bring some content to the facility that's specifically for that community."

Topeka at the 'center of effort'

Mayor Mike Padilla said it's important for Topeka to be the center of these sorts of events.

"It's important to note that as the Hispanic community becomes a large population in Topeka and a very productive population in the city of Topeka, that their culture and music is acknowledged through events like this," Padilla said. "It's important for me to have Topeka at the center of that effort."

Sean Dixon, president of Visit Topeka, in a news release said he's thrilled to see the events center embrace the rich cultural diversity of the community.

"The historic concert will undoubtedly contribute to the vibrancy and inclusivity Topeka's entertainment scene is becoming known for," Dixon said.
