It’s been a wet start to New York Fashion Week this fall, as thunder, lightning and heavy rain ascended upon the city just as several celebrities made their way to various shows, including Prabal Gurung’s outdoor runway presentation Friday, Sept. 8.

While the weather wasn’t at its absolute worst, stars such as Lori Harvey, Venus Willians, KiKi Layne, Awkwafina and Jeannie Mai Jenkins were forced to protect their Fashion Week fits from light rain during the show with large, clear umbrellas.

Taking place on Roosevelt Island, Gurang presented its “West Meets East” themed collection, inspired by the designer’s recent trip to India to visit his grandmother, where he drew inspiration from patinaed wallpaper and photos of his aunts on their way to America.

“In the culture, there’s so much conversation about East meeting West, but it’s time the West meets the East,” Gurang shared, via Fashionista. “I’ve always loved the collaging of ideas, of continents, of gender. It started with that and with this idea of: How do you decolonize our taste, our eyes, what we love, what we think is cool, what we think?”

“I myself am in the process of figuring out my own eye, my own taste and how it has been informed. My goal is never to dictate. My goal is to start a dialogue, always.”
