Lorde is no stranger to drugs. In 2021, she told Vogue that substances had informed her music a great deal, explaining that Pure Heroine was shaped by alcohol, Melodrama by MDMA, and Solar Power by marijuana. Now, as she’s seemingly kicking off a new era of sorts, Lorde has confirmed that another drug has been inspiring her recently: mushrooms.

More specifically, she sent out an email to her fans on Wednesday night with the subject line “how I’ve been, revised,” in which she offered an update on her life and shared a story of a recent ‘shroom trip that had a big impact on her. After realizing that “listening to [her] body is hard for [her]” and experiencing a number of health effects as a result, she reported that her psychedelic foray got her back in touch with herself… and even helped her feel the presence of God.

“Earlier this year, I ate two handfuls of mushrooms, solid doses that tasted like green dirt,” she wrote. “I got a lot of information about what my body had been through in our time so far, what it needed, where God was and where God wasn’t; I felt in my bones how destabilizing it is to leave home and start a new life the way I did. I also saw that my body is completely magnificent, and that hating it is as futile as hating a tree; that I truly, truly love doing my job, and that my life is like a beautiful tapestry, and every inch of it is precious and has meaning.”

Elsewhere, Lorde remarked that she feels as if she’s transitioning out of her “childhood working decade” and into “the one that comes next,” whatever that may be. (Depending on the volume of mushrooms, it could possibly land anywhere between “fresh wave of inspiration” and “Lorde debuts live set of Grateful Dead, Phish covers.”) She added that in the middle of her European tour, she put together a “new version” of her show in a matter of days.

“It was good to change gears and get out of my head,” Lorde wrote. “I put effort into the show, changing the setlist and arrangements, it was cool how you picked up on that, and it felt good dancing to the new versions with you, looking out at you, all sweaty with your friends, all on the same drugs. I felt the throb of history that’s under this music now, how each year makes these songs feel more like collectively written and sung pieces. I left my body and merged with yours and it was ecstasy.” Read the full email statement here.

Lorde has no upcoming tour dates at the moment, but if you want to relive some of her highlights from the past year, you can check out the times she appeared with Consequence’s 2022 Band of the Year, MUNA, in New York and Adelaide, Australia.
