The post The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Cast and Character Guide: Who’s Who in Amazon’s Epic New Series appeared first on Consequence.

Fans have been patiently, (or, let’s face it, impatiently), awaiting the release of the new series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power since Amazon bought the TV rights to the franchise for $250 million back in 2017. In the past couple of months, we’ve finally been rewarded for our patience with a couple of promotional breadcrumbs, like a highly-anticipated Super Bowl trailer, as well as first looks at the characters via Vanity Fair.

The show, which is coming to Prime on September 2, 2022, is set thousands of years before The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings in Middle-earth’s Second Age, and promises to fabricate a fantastical backstory to the franchise we know and love. With that comes a cast of brand new characters, as well as some of our favorite familiar faces. Here’s your definitive, comprehensive breakdown on all of the show’s characters that we know of so far, plus who’s playing them.

Elrond (Robert Aramayo)

Robert Aramayo as Elrond (Ben Rothstein/Amazon Studios)

Even if you’re not a Lord of the Rings aficionado, chances are you know who Elrond is. This half-Elven warrior was first seen in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings (2001). Played by Hugo Weaving, he fought with the Last Alliance of Elves and Men in the Second Age. Throughout the franchise, he has played many different roles: from the Lord of Middle Earth Elf Sanctuary Rivendell, to a reformer of the Fellowship of the Ring, and foster father to Aragorn, the heir of Isildur.

Based on the promotional images for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, it looks like the show is going to be starting with a younger, more spritely Elrond, and in turn we will bear witness to his origin story. In the Amazon series, Elrond is played by Robert Aramayo, a British actor who is best known for his appearance as Eddard Stark in Season 6 of Game of Thrones. Aramayo fit right in to that medieval fantasy world, so we’re safe to assume that he’s going to be a more than suitable Elrond.

Galadriel (Morfydd Clark)

Morfydd Clark as Galadriel (Matt Grace/Amazon Studios)

Another character returning from the Lord of the Rings franchise is Galadriel, a royal Elf from the Noldor and the Teleri, who was played by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson’s adaptations. Galadriel helped lead the Noldor rebellion, and ruled Middle-earth’s Lothlórien with her husband, Celeborn. She is often celebrated for her beauty and strength, with Tolkein describing her as “the mightiest and fairest of all the Elves that remained in Middle-earth” in Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age.

While she will remain a central character, it looks like The Rings of the Power is going to be taking a different approach to Galadriel. In promotional images, she is scorched and disheveled from battle, and looks more like a warrior than the enchanted elf that we came to know in the books and their film adaptations. This new interpretation is both nerve-wracking and exciting, and hints that we’re going to get to see Galadriel’s transformation into a commander.

This new Galadriel is played by Welsh actress Morfydd Clark, who recently impressed audiences and earned many accolades for her impressively dark performance as a devout Christian in Saint Maud.

Halbrand (Charlie Vickers)

Charlie Vickers as Halbrand (Amazon Studios)

With Halbrand, we officially get into the zone of non-canonical Lord of the Rings characters. You heard it: this guy was created specifically for The Rings of Power. Halbrand lived during the Second Age, and encountered Galadriel while stranded in the Sundering Seas. It’s unclear exactly what he’ll be up to in the show, but anyone who joins forces with Galadriel is bound to get into some bad ass business.

Halbrand is played by Charlie Vickers, who is best known for his role in Palm Beach (2019).

Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi)

Nazanin Boniadi as Bronwyn (Amazon Studios)

Another character created specifically for The Rings of Power, Bronwyn is a single mother and healer from Tirharad, a village of Men. She is in love with Arondir, an Elf who was also created for the series.

Bronwyn is played by the Persian actress Nazanin Boniadi, who made her name on General Hospital, and since then has appeared in beloved TV shows such as How I Met Your Mother and the prestige spy thriller Homeland.

Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova)

Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir (Matt Grace/Amazon Studios for Vanity Fair)

As we have already established, Arondir is an Elf who is in love with the healer Bronwyn. Not much else is known about the character as of now. He is played by Ismael Cruz Córdove, who made a name for himself on Showtime’s acclaimed series Ray Donovan.

Disa (Sophia Nomvete)

Sophia Nomvete as Disa (Ben Rothstein/Amazon Studios)

Disa is the princess of a dwarven city, who was also created for The Rings of Power. Her promotional image has stirred up some controversy with fans, who claim that she should have a beard because that is how Tolkein described dwarven princesses. But who knows: maybe Disa will grow some facial hair as the episodes go on.

Disa is played by Sophia Nomvete, an actress of African and Iranian descent. She has a mix of TV and stage credits under her belt, and was nominated for two WhatsOnStage awards for “Best Supporting Actress” and “Best Supporting Role in a Musical” by The Evening Standard and Broadway World. On stage, she appeared in Vice Versa (RSC), Miss Littlewood (RSC), and England People Very Nice (Royal National Theater). She has also worked with Chichester Festival Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and the Royal Exchange Theatre.

Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur)

Owain Arthur as Prince Durin IV (Amazon Studios)

Durin IV is the King of the Durin’s Folk, a clan of Dwarves also known as Longbeards. He comes from a long line of royalty, and is often considered to be a reincarnation of Durin I. Perhaps most importantly, he wears one of the titular, mind-controlling Rings of Power, after inheriting it from Durin III.

Playing Prince Durin IV in The Rings of Power is Welsh actor Owain Arthur, who made his name on the stage by starring in The National Theatre’s One Man, Two Guvnors. He has also worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Exchange Theatre, and the Comedy Theatre.

Isildur (Maxim Baldry)

Isildur, the son of warrior Elendil, is a sailor who, in Tolkein’s lore, becomes a warrior and eventually the king of Middle-earth kingdoms Arnor and Gondor. He is best known for stealing the Ring of Power from Sauron, leading the precious artifact to later land in the hands of Gollum and then Bilbo.

In The Rings of Power, Isildur is played by Maxim Baldry, an English actor who is known for his role in Mr. Bean’s Holiday. Since then, he has appeared in Hollyoaks and Doctor Who, and played a featured role in the HBO miniseries Years and Years.

Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards)

Charles Edwards in The Crown (Netflix)

Celebrimbor appears in Legendarium, a collection of J. R. R. Tolkein’s unpublished works that serve as background for the Lord of the Rings series. He is the Elven smith who was coerced by Sauron to forge the infamous, dangerous Rings of Power, which the Dark Lord later used to dominate Middle-earth.

Playing Celebrimbor in the series is Charles Edwards, a British actor who played Michael Palin in the BBC Monty Python docu-comedy Holy Flying Circus. He later made appearances in the acclaimed TV shows Downton Abbey and Sherlock.

Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh)

Not much is known about Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot, other than that she is a Harfoot, which is similar to a Hobbit (and of course we all know who they are). She is played by Markella Kavenagh, who had her breakout role in 2019’s True History of the Kelly Gang.

Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker)

Gil-galad is a High King of Elves, who rules the region of Lindon and is mentioned in Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. In an alliance between Elves and Men against the Dark Lord Sauron, Gil-galad stole the One Ring from Sauron, and was subsequently killed, leaving the Ring to Isildur.

In The Rings of Power, Gil-galad is played by Benjamin Walker, an American actor who made his name as Abraham Lincoln in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. He has also made a number of Broadway appearances, starring as Andrew Jackson in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, and Patrick Bateman in the musical adaptation American Psycho.

The Stranger (Daniel Weyman)

The Stranger is perhaps The Rings of Power’s most intriguing character. His identity is a total secret, and fans will probably have to wait until Amazon releases the show before learning anything more. Sadly, that’s all we know (and even if we did know more, we’d never tell!).

The Stranger is played by English theater actor Daniel Weyman. Chances are you haven’t seen him in anything just yet, but that just fuels the characters’ mystique even more.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres September 2nd, 2022 on Amazon Prime Video.
