Valentine's Day falls on a Wednesday this year. What better way to get over the hump than to partake in one of the many entertainment options in Athens?

For this list of Valentine's Day activities, the Banner-Herald made our selections based on variety in terms of cost, theme and fun factor.

  • Beats, Rhymes & Life (Hendershot's, 237 Prince Ave.): Got a mushy poem you wrote for your date or a passionate rant about love? Read it onstage backed by a three-piece band at this monthly open mic that is one of the best-kept secrets in the Athens music scene. Admission is free, sign-up is at 7 p.m., and the show lasts from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. Hosted by ATHfactor-Liberty Entertainment COO Montu Miller.

  • Princess Bride Trivia (B&B Theatres, 1570 Lexington Rd.): With a time-honored reputation as being one of the most quotable films ever made, 1987's comedic fantasy "The Princess Bride" is known for being just as romantic as it is hilarious. B&B's 7:30 p.m. trivia contest is free to enter, open to all ages, and there is a prize for the winner. The theatre also has a full-service bar for patrons ages 21 and up.

  • Salsa Dance Class (Starland Lounge & Lanes, 145 E. Clayton St.): Do you want to learn to dance? Are you already an awesome dancer and you just want to show up and get down? SALSAthens hosts weekly Cuban-style Salsa dance classes for individuals or partners. Admission is $10 per person, and the schedule begins at 6:30 p.m. for advanced dancers and continues at 7:30 p.m. for beginner and intermediate dancers.

  • Valentine's Supper Club (Athentic Brewing Company, 106 Park Ave.): Local restaurateurs Kat and Felix Ahmed will offer up a four-course family-style meal that is perfect for a night out with friends. For $75 per person or $130 per couple, guests will enjoy hors d'oeuvres, appetizers, main course and dessert, and each course is paired with a craft brew.   • Cocktail Workshop (Live Wire Athens, 227 W. Dougherty St.): If anyone knows cocktails, it's Algy Fonts, the general manager at Live Wire. For $90 per couple, Algy will conduct workshop sessions at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. that will include three crafted cocktails per person, one alcohol-free cocktail per person, a charcuterie board, fruit tray, and chocolate-dipped strawberries.
