Looking for some Labor Day weekend fun? Augusta area has games, movies and more

Labor Day is on Monday which means, for many workers, an extra day off and a long weekend ahead.

Now that Tropical Storm Idalia has passed, the sun is shining and it’s time to get out and have some fun. “The Big Mo” drive-in is one of multiple theaters offering very some special movie nights. Those looking to jam or have a laugh will have some great options for live entertainment. Those wanting something a bit more competitive can try their luck and skills with a few different game nights.

Here’s a look at these and other things to do in town this weekend:

Game days

Augusta GreenJackets' home stand against the Salem Red Sox continues through Sunday at SRP Park in North Augusta's Riverside Village at 187 Railroad Ave. Friday's game starts at 7:05 p.m. and celebrates Atlanta Braves fandom. Saturday's starts at 6:05 p.m. and features a dog-friendly game, live music before the game and children 12-and-under running the bases after the game. Sunday's starts at 6:05 p.m. and offers a luau-themed game plus fireworks afterwards. For more information, go to milb.com.

College football is back: How to watch, stream state of Georgia football teams

Puzzling Adventures' scavenger hunts are every day this weekend at 11 a.m. Players are recommended to start their hunts in downtown Augusta at 836 Reynolds St. This is a cross between a scavenger hunt, an adventure race, and an informative self-guided tour. Each adventure consists of a series of locations, and at each one, participants answer questions or solve puzzles to receive their next task. The only equipment needed is a mobile phone with an Internet connection. Entry costs about $20 per team. For more information, go to eventbrite.com.

Cardboard Castle Games is bringing Brews and Board Games 5-8 p.m. Monday at Savannah River Brewing Co. in downtown Augusta at 813 5th St. After buying a locally brewed drink, guests can enjoy a variety of board and card games through out the night.

Dr. Factenstein’s Trivia has Bingo at the Elk's Lodge 7-8:30 p.m. Friday in Augusta at 205 Elkdom Ct. There will be four free games with prizes for the winners.

Special movie nights

Monetta Drive-In Theatre's 24th annual Labor Day Weekend Triple Feature Extravaganza is this weekend. While "The Big Mo" normally screens two movies on each of its three screens, this special will feature three movies on each screen. Here are the showings:

  • Main Field: "Barbie," "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" then "Oppenheimer."

  • Screen 2: "Elemental," a sing-along version of this year's "The Little Mermaid" then "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."

  • Screen 3: "The Equalizer 3," "Gran Turismo" then "Something's Gotta Give."

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the first movies start between 8-8:15 p.m. The box office takes cash only. Admission is $10 for ages 12 and up, $5 for ages 4-11, and free for ages 3 and younger. For more information, go to thebigmo.com.

The next installment of "Flashback Cinemas" at GTC Evans Cinemas is the 1985 classic "The Goonies." Showtimes are 1 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. with tickets starting at about $10. For more information, go to gtcmovies.com.

Regal Augusta Exchange is also showing "The Goonies" on Sunday at 3 p.m. for about $10. The theater is also screening AEW Wrestling "All Out" on Sunday at 7 p.m. for $27. To book your tickets, go to regmovies.com.

Performances

Augusta's Candlelight Series wraps up 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Augusta Common off Broad Street. The "White Party Finale" will showcase the Brown Sugar Band. General admission is $10 while children 12 and under get in free.

Schrodinger's Catis bringing back eXtreme Theatre Games at 10 p.m. Friday at Le Chat Noir in downtown Augusta at 304 8th St. Admission to the improv theatre starts at $16.20. Tickets are available at simpletix.com.

The Aiken Music Fest Series' next installment spotlights Captain Midnight Band Saturday at Highfields Event Center in Aiken at 118 Gaston Rd. There will be music, tailgating, food and kids activities. Gates open at 6 p.m. with music starting at 7 p.m. with opener Gavin Reilly Band. Tickets are available for $17.85 at eventbrite.com.

Artistic activities

The 2nd annual "AbstrACTION" Art Show is 6-10 p.m. Friday at the 600 Broad Hub in downtown Augusta. Every six weeks over the past year, AbstrAction Art Group used three prompts at a time to inspire its artists to create original pieces in any medium, size or style. "Souls of the Midnight Dreamers" art exhibition is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History in downtown Augusta at 1116 Phillips St. The gallery celebrates true believers of the past in order to inspire the dreamers of the future. Guests will also have refreshments and live jazz to enjoy. Admission is free.

Morris Museum of Art is hosting its Artrageous! Family Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Participants will make their own block prints inspired by the museum's collection. Admission is free. The museum is located in downtown Augusta at the end of 10th Street.

Book on a Box's Opening Reception is 6-8 p.m. Friday at Book Tavern in downtown Augusta at 978 Broad St. It will kick off a whole month of the book store's walls boasting literature-inspired artwork by 25 local creatives. Guests will be able to meet the participating artists and enjoy some refreshments at the reception.

Parties and festivities

A Labor Day Rooftop Party is being organized 4-7 p.m. Monday at the Jackson's Bluff Rooftop Baron top of the Crowne Plaza in North Augusta's Riverside Village at 1060 Center St. There will be a BBQ buffet and live music. General admission is $10 and those wanting to eat from the buffet will have to pay an extra $20. Tickets are available on eventbrite.com.

Atmosphere Augusta's next event is its Dark Dance Edition at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Le Chat Noir. Gothic music from DJ MOX and dancing will be available for ages 18 and up. There is a cash cover of $10.

Studio on Eighth's Salsa Night is Friday in downtown Augusta at 230 8th St. It starts with a free salsa lesson at 8 p.m. This event is also reserved for ages 18 and up. There is a $10 cover.

Local markets

Augusta Market returns to the 8th Street Plaza in downtown Augusta Saturday at 8 a.m. There will be live music and dozens of vendors selling locally-made food and gifts. Admission is free.

Evans Market is back at Evans Towne Center Park off Washington Road in Evans 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Guests will shop from farmers, artisans and other local vendors. Admission is free.
