‘The New Look’ Trailer: Juliette Binoche’s Coco Chanel Fights to Stay Relevant Amid Christian Dior’s Rise

The rise of Christian Dior and fall of Coco Chanel is captured in Apple TV+’s new series “The New Look.”

The World War II-set 10-episode show stars Emmy winner Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior and Oscar winner Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel and was filmed exclusively in Paris.

The official synopsis reads: “Set against the World War II Nazi occupation of Paris, ‘The New Look’ focuses on the pivotal moment in the 20th century when the French city led the world back to life through its fashion icon Christian Dior. As Dior rises to prominence with his groundbreaking, iconic imprint of beauty and influence, Chanel’s reign as the world’s most famous fashion designer is put into jeopardy.”

The ensemble cast also includes Maisie Williams as Catherine Dior, John Malkovich as Lucien Lelong, Emily Mortimer as Elsa Lombardi, Claes Bang as Spatz, and Glenn Close as Carmel Snow.

Fellow designers Pierre Balmain and Cristóbal Balenciaga are also fictionalized onscreen in addition to Chanel and Dior. All designs and clothing were created by Christian Dior through collaboration with the House of Dior.

The soundtrack for the series is curated and produced by Grammy Award winner Jack Antonoff and features covers of popular early to mid-20th century songs performed by Antonoff’s Bleachers, Florence Welch, Lana Del Rey, Matty Healy of The 1975, Beabadoobee, Nick Cave, Perfume Genius, and more.

Showrunner Todd A. Kessler created “The New Look” and serves as writer, director, and executive producer. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark A. Baker additionally executive produce. The series is produced by Apple Studios and DB-AK Productions.

“The New Look” actress Binoche leads France’s 2024 Oscar submission “The Taste of Things” alongside Benoît Magimel. Binoche told IndieWire’s Anne Thompson that starring in the Anh Hung Tran film proved to have a “very provocative” element due to its period setting romance.

“It is showing this lifestyle that is different from nowadays,” Binoche said. “It has to do with another rhythm, a slow motion in the way of living, taking in the environment, taking in feelings, taking in what you do. I don’t live this kind of life, and a lot of people don’t.”

She added, “And this film is very provocative. It looks like she is submissive to him, but actually she’s not. So don’t judge a book by its cover.”

“The New Look” premieres February 14 on Apple TV+. The show will debut its first three episodes, followed by one new episode every Wednesday through April 3. Check out the trailer below.
