A look at Penn State basketball’s roster for the NCAA Basketball Tournament

In just two short years, Penn State men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry built a team ready to end the school’s drought of NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament appearances. Using a mix of key returning players already established within the program upon his arrival and notable additions from the college basketball transfer portal, Shrewsberry coached Penn State to an at-large bid in the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament following a thrilling run to the Big Ten championship game.

Here is a look at Penn State’s roster as it heads to its first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament since 2011, starting with the starting five that helped get them there.

Position: Guard

Year: Senior+

Height: 6’4″

Weight: 209 lb

[autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] was one of the first key players to join the program following the hiring of Shrewsberry. Shrewsberry made a strong effort to recruit Pickett out of the transfer portal from Sienna, as he was one of the top names in the transfer portal at the time. Pickett lived up to the hype and turned in an All-American season for the Nittany Lions.

Pickett leads Penn State in points per game (18.1), assists per game (6.8), field goal percentage (52.1), rebounds per game (7.4), steals per game (0.9).

Seth Lundy

Height: 6’6″

Weight: 220 lb

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] has been one of the key players for Penn State throughout his entire college career. Lundy is not afraid to shoot a contested three-pointer and he is Penn State’s second-leading scorer behind Pickett. Lundy has drained 85 three-pointers this season for the Nittany Lions.

Position: Guard

Year: Senior+

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 200 lb

Another key transfer addition for Penn State this season has been Camren Wynter, one of the only players on the roster with previous NCAA tournament experience. The former Drexel Dragon came to Penn State this season and quickly provided some good veteran leadership. The former CAA standout came up with some big plays in Penn Stae’s final week and a half with a game-winning three-pointer in overtime at Northwestern and a game-winning bucket against Maryland to close out the regular season.

Andrew Funk

Yet another key addition to the roster for Penn State this season has been [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag], who transferred to the Nittany Lions from Bucknell. Position: Forward

Year: Freshman

Height: 6’10”

While most of the starting five is made up of veteran players, freshman [autotag]Kebba Njie[/autotag] has been used to provide some size underneath the basket for the Nittany Lions as a true freshman. The former ESPN top 100 recruit is one of Penn State’s top basketball recruits in program history, and he has handled himself well in starting mix led by veterans around him.

Myles Dread

Position: Guard/Forward

Year: Senior+

Height: 6’4″

Weight: 235 lb

One of Penn State’s top options off the bench, [autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] has stuck with the program and been a lightning rod at times. Though sometimes streaky, Dread can provide a lift of offense off the bench when needed.

Evan Mahaffey

Position: Guard/Forward

Year: Freshman

Height: 6’6″

Weight: 200 lb

Another newcomer to the program through the recruiting process, [autotag]Evan Mahaffey[/autotag] remains a bench option for the Nittany Lions heading into the tournament with just eight minutes played during the Big Ten tournament. But he will be a player worth paying attention to going into the 2023-24 season.

Kanye Clary

Position: Guard

Year: Freshman

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 192 lb

A key recruit for Penn State in the Class of 2022, Kanye Clary has been a key option off the bench for the Nittany Lions and should provide the Nittany Lions with a good successor at the guard position as a starting candidate next season.

Michael Henn
