Apple TV’s “The New Look” tells the story of Christian Dior (Emmy champ Ben Mendelsohn) as he struggles to create a new fashion line in Paris soon after the end of World War II.  He comes into conflict with the legendary designer Coco Chanel (Oscar winner Juliette Binoche). This sumptuous costume drama spares no expense and showcases these two award-winning actors.

Critics have embraced the show, too, with Angie Han (The Hollywood Reporter) calling it “handsome and heartbreaking.” Among the others giving it rave reviews:

More from GoldDerby

Joyce Slaton (Common Sense Media) observed: “‘The New Look’ is a powerful and complex look at what terror and oppression does to people both ordinary and extraordinary alike; not an easy watch, but a great one.”

Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) noted: “‘The New Look’ is a fine addition to the recent group of World War II dramas set mostly outside of battle, including the stunning movie ‘The Zone of Interest’ and the miniseries ‘A Small Light’ and ‘All the Light We Cannot See.'”

Thelma Adams (The Wrap) proclaimed: “Biographical fiction at its finest, a heartbreaking story of triumph and loss amid breathtaking beauty and institutional cruelty.”

These stellar notices have catapulted “The New Look” into the Emmy conversation for Best Drama Series. Currently, we are predicting that “The Crown,” “The Morning Show,” “The Gilded Age,” “Slow Horses,” “3 Body Problem,” “The Curse,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “Loki” will be the eight shows nominated. However, “The New Look” is right on the precipice of breaking into this lineup — and there are several reasons as to why it could happen.

Firstly, Apple TV+ is a savvy Emmys player. “Ted Lasso” won Best Comedy Series twice, “Severance” was nominated for Best Drama Series and “Shrinking,” “Bad Sisters,” “Black Bird,” and “The Morning Show” all contended in key categories, including acting, directing, and writing. This year, another of its shows, “Lessons in Chemistry,” is all but certain to reap a Best Limited Series bid.

Plus, period pieces tend to do very well in the Best Drama Series category. Recent such nominees include “The Crown,” “Pose,” “Bridgerton,” “The Americans,” “Downton Abbey,” and “Mad Men.” “The New Look” very much occupies the same space as “The Crown”: a sumptuous, spare-no-expense period drama depicting famous historical figures and their untold stories. We know how much Emmy voters love “The Crown” for telling us those stories, so it’s reasonable to believe that they will feel the same way about “The New Look.”

“The New Look” is sure to contend in a slew of below-the-line categories, including costumes, production design, and hair and makeup. We are predicting that Mendelsohn will reap a Best Drama Actor nomination while, Binoche is on the precipice over in Best Drama Actress. Supporting players Maisie Williams and John Malkovich could also contend.
