Look Back ... to the final concert for a beloved band, 1999

May 9—May 9, 1949, in The Star: Funeral services for seven-year-old Billy Joe Hedricks of Blue Mountain, who was killed instantly when he was struck by lightning two days ago, were held yesterday afternoon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The young boy, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hedricks, was struck as he watched an electrical storm from a window of his grandmother's house near Guntersville. He was pronounced dead at a hospital in that north Alabama city. Also this date: The first Alabama high school golf championship opens in Birmingham with qualifying round later this week. Ten 4-man teams have already been entered; Anniston High School will be represented, although the article doesn't say who's on it.

May 9, 1999, in The Star: Corey Maze of Centre was initiated recently into Auburn University's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society. Maze, the son of Oneal and Sharon Maze, is majoring in pre-law. Membership to Phi Kappa Phi is offered to the top five percent of graduating students from each of Auburn's 13 schools and colleges. Also this date: Friday, May 14, 1999, is the scheduled date for the final public concert of the 14th Army Band. The concert at the Anniston High School auditorium will celebrate the band's 45 years of service to the community and the nation. The band will begin deactivation after closing ceremonies at Fort McClellan on May 20.
