Elliot Page gushed about his wife in several interviews and social media posts before the pair announced plans to divorce after 3 years of marriage.
Page, 33, and Portner, 26, shared a statement with PEOPLE on Tuesday announcing their decision. The two also revealed they separated last summer.
"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer," the two said in a joint statement. "We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends."
Though Page often praised his wife on social media, the last time the actor posted about them together was in March at the start of the COVID-19 lockdown. The video showed Page playing guitar while Portner, a celebrated dancer, moved to the music.
He also celebrated her birthday with a sweet photo in November.
While Portner hasn't posted about Page since 2019, she did support the actor when he announced his new pronouns as a transgender man last month.
"I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot's existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much," she wrote alongside a screenshot of Page's heartfelt statement.
Before then, Page opened up about his wife in a few interviews.
In a 2019 interview with PorterEdit, the Umbrella Academy actor said he was "so in love" and absolutely adored "being married."
"I'll be walking my dog, and I start talking to people, and I end up telling them about my wife and making them look at our Instagram. I'm that person," he told the outlet.
Earlier that year, Page celebrated the couple's one year anniversary by sharing selfies of the two smiling and then crying from their celebration.
"Before/after of an over one year anniversary convo. Beyond grateful to all those who fought to allow us to be wife & wife. I love this magical human. I'm so f------- lucky," Page wrote.
In a post months earlier, Page also celebrated Portner on her birthday with a sweet note.
"Happy birthday my love. My wife. I have no words for how grateful I am. My heart grows and grows and grows with you. Thank you for inspiring me and for loving me," he wrote.
