Look Back ... to a downtown arts festival, 1999

May 23—May 23, 1949, in The Star: A fire of undetermined cause gutted the transmitter building of Anniston radio station WOOB near 16th Street and Boynton Avenue a few minutes after midnight today, fire Chief E. E. White reported. A one-story frame structure which housed the transmitter and other electrical equipment was badly damaged, and the equipment itself was believed to be a complete loss. The sparsely settled section of town received no other fire damage beyond the transmitter building.

May 23, 1999, in The Star: The Anniston Country & Western Dance Club squared off on Noble Street yesterday during the 17th annual Anniston Arts and Crafts Extravaganza. Sponsored by the Spirit of Anniston program, the festival included a car show, craft vendors and sidewalk sales by downtown stores. Jim Russell, who portrays a clown character, made a balloon hat for 11-year-old Torri Spinks of Anniston.
