London Police Opens Investigation Into Harvey Weinstein Accusations

The saga of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault has expanded across the pond as London’s Metropolitan Police have begun to investigate allegations against the Hollywood producer. Meanwhile, police in his hometown of New York launched a “review” of the claims and are looking for new victims.

“The Metropolitan Police Service was passed an allegation of sexual assault by Merseyside Police on Wednesday, 11 October,” Metropolitan Police Service said in a statement. “The allegation will be assessed by officers from the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command.”

Although the suspect is widely reported to be Harvey Weinstein, the statement says, “The Met does not identify any person who may, or may not be, subject to an investigation.”

While the list of sexual violence committed by Weinstein continues to mount, no indication exists that he engaged in child abuse.

“Based on information referenced in published news reports, the NYPD is conducting a review to determine if there are any additional complaints relating to the Harvey Weinstein matter,” the NYPD said in a statement. “No filed complaints have been identified as of this time.”

In reports published by the New York Times on Oct. 5 and the New Yorker on Oct. 10, women have come forward accusing Weinstein of decades of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and, in three instances, rape. Since the articles were published, other women, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Cara Delevingne, have shared their stories about being assaulted by Weinstein. The entertainment industry has rapidly distanced itself from Weinstein, with many celebrities and companies condemning him. He was fired from the Weinstein Company, which he helped found in 2005, on Sunday.
