Despite his undefeated 16-0-1 record, 26-year-old Jamaine Ortiz faces Goliathan odds against the decorated Vasiliy Lomachenko. The Ukrainian boxer is a former world champion in three weight classes and a gold-winning Olympian — all after being one of the best amateur boxers ever with a record of 396 wins and 1 loss. In his professional career, Lomachenko has built a record of 16-2 with 11 knockouts.
Considering Lomachanko’s previous successes, oddsmakers have the 34-year-old as the heavy favorite for tonight’s fight with odds of -2000, compared to Oritz’s +900.
Lomachenko was scheduled to fight George Kambosos Jr. in June for the undisputed lightweight title, but opted to stay in his home country of Ukraine and aid in the defense against Russia. Lomachenko began working security detail on the border shortly after Russia’s invasion, joining fellow boxers including Oleksandr Usyk and Vitali Klitschko. Haney took Lomachenko’s place against Kambosos, beating the Australian boxer for the undisputed championship.
“I love my sport, and I am so glad to be back,” said Lomachenko. And, despite the odds, Lomachenko is not dismissing Ortiz as a guaranteed win: “My goal is to win the undisputed lightweight title, but I will not take Jamaine Ortiz lightly.”
Ortiz, meantime, has been relatively quiet since beating former junior lightweight world champion Jamel Herring into retirement in May. Now, Ortiz is ready to see if he can perform with boxing’s greats. An upset win would be massive for Ortiz, and it’s not out of the question.
“I learned a lot of things about myself in the Jamel Herring fight, as I do in every fight,” said Ortiz. “I try to make improvements. I go back to the basics and fundamentals and try to master those skills. Saturday night, you’re going to see the best Jamaine Ortiz.”
