Lollapalooza Founder Perry Farrell On EDM: “I Want To Vomit It Out Of My Nostrils”

Next weekend Lollapalooza will take place in Chicago’s Grant Park, and this year marks the festival’s 25th anniversary. In honor of the milestone, founder (and Jane’s Addiction lead singer) Perry Farrell spoke with the Chicago Tribune about the festival over the years. While most of their conversation focused on past big moments, reflections, and where Perry feels the festival could be heading, the singer did share some thoughts on the current state of music.
“I hate EDM. I want to vomit it out of my nostrils. I can’t stand what it did to what I love, which is house music, which was meditative, psychedelic — it took you on a journey. … I sometimes cringe at my own festival,” he told the paper. Perry originally included electronic music in Lollapalooza because he grew up attending clubs and dancing to house music, but the modern version of this isn’t what Perry remembers electronic music to be.
He does go on to say that he recognizes how popular EDM is. “You’d have to do away with pop to escape it, and if you want to do a festival you can’t do away with pop.”
