‘Loki’ will bring Tom Hiddleston back to the Emmys

It has been a lucky 13 years since Tom Hiddleston first played Loki, the God of Mischief in the film “Thor.” He returned to the role recently for season two of the TV series “Loki.” This Disney+ show provided a beautiful end (we’ll see) to the character’s epic arc.

The sophomore outing of the series seee Loki trying to save the universe with the help of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Mobius (Owen Wilson), and Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan). Kang (Jonathan Majors) is once again at the center of the trouble. The series is fantastical and is held together by the superb performance of Hiddleston. Once again, this classically trained actor brings Shakespearean authority to the role. He is also able to infuse increasing vulnerability to the former villain, making Loki one of the best characters in MCU history. Critics agree, “Loki” is the Tom Hiddleston show.

Zaki Hasan (San Francisco Chronicle) opined: “It’s remarkable how Hiddleston, now in his second decade playing the God of Mischief after making his debut in 2011’s ‘Thor,’ continues to find unexcavated layers of pathos and complexity in the fan-favorite former villain.”

John Nugent (Empire) exclaimed: “Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves — most of all Hiddleston. Having donned the green horns for well over a decade by this point, his Loki remains endlessly charismatic. Hiddleston still imbues him with that delicious sense of playful moral ambiguity, but there’s a clarity to the character at this point that feels fresh: that somehow, by trying to save the universe, he finally found the glorious purpose he was looking for.”

Therese Lacson (Collider) observed: “Tom Hiddleston easily slides back into his persona as Loki — perhaps a bit more harried this season and a bit wiser, but still the trickster god… In lesser hands, the character might feel like too sharp of a shift, but Hiddleston has always imparted a fragility to his character that has made him easy to love even when he’s doing particularly terrible things. A heroic Loki doesn’t feel that far removed from the villainous one — perhaps just a bit less deranged and a bit more humble.”

As a result, we are predicting that Hiddleston will be nominated for Best Drama Actor alongside Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”), Dominic West (“The Crown”), Colin Farrell (“Sugar”), Donald Glover (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), and Morgan Spector (“The Gilded Age”). Hiddleston is a good bet here for many reasons.

Firstly, we already know that Emmy voters like him. He was nominated for two awards at the 2016 Emmys — Best Limited Series and Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for the “The Night Manager.”

He also has the might of the House of Mouse behind him. Since Disney started rolling out these high-end TV shows, they’ve reaped multiple Emmy bids, including plenty for the show’s performers. Giancarlo Esposito, Timothy Olyphant, and Carl Weathers were nominated for “The Mandalorian” and Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, and Kathryn Hahn picked up bids for “WandaVision.”

Hiddleston would be part of a growing trend of actors landing Best Drama Actor nominations for genre shows. In recent years, Emmy voters have shown much more inclination to nominate actors in this category for sci-fi, fantasy, or horror shows, including the likes of Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”), Majors (“Lovecraft Country”), Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”), and “Westworld” trio Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, and Anthony Hopkins.

Hiddleston’s status as an A-lister also helps. Best Drama Actor is often populated with actors of his ilk, such as Steve Carell (“The Morning Show”), Hopkins (“Westworld”), and Matthew McConaughey (“True Detective”). Plus, Hiddleston has also proven his awards credentials with “Loki” this year. He was nominated for Best Drama Actor earlier this year at the Critics Choice Awards.
