'Logan' Trailer Breakdown

The first trailers for Logan are out — and, wow, it looks awesome. Even if you are fatigued from how present Wolverine has been in the X-Men movies, you have to admit that Hugh Jackman’s final film in the franchise looks promising. Let’s go over the five most interesting things from the Logan trailer.

1. Logan Looks “Hurt”

Well, much like the title of that Johnny Cash/Nine Inch Nails song, Logan is looking hurt. Remember, this is a guy who took a gunshot to the head and didn’t get a scratch. Now he’s sporting scars all over his body and can’t even put on a shirt without struggling.

2. She’s My Daughter, She’s My Clone, She’s My Daughter, She’s My Clone

We have even more reason to believe that the young lady Wolverine’s going to have to keep safe is X-23, Logan’s clone-daughter who eventually, in the comics, adopts the title of Wolverine for herself. Professor X tells Logan, “She’s like you. Very much like you.” Seems like a hint, no?

3. Old Man Charles

Speaking of Professor X, we get a glimpse beyond just that photo of Charles Xavier. The X-Men movies have basically been one long montage of Charles being smacked around, shot, or obliterated. Here’s hoping we get a healthy dose of the ancient professor before he is inevitably killed.

4. So It Foes

We saw footage of our two newest members of the X-Men universe. Most notably, we see Boyd Holbrook as the movie’s villain, Donald Pierce, who, unlike most other X-Men antagonists, is not a mutant. He is a cyborg with superhuman strength and agility. Additionally, there was the briefest of glimpses, we think, of Stephen Merchant as Caliban, a mutant who can detect other mutants.

5. Scratching Beyond the Surface

And, finally, there’s a red band version of the trailer that shows this movie is definitely going to be violent. No longer will the film shy away from Wolverine actually stabbing people with those claws.
