Loch Ness monster and Harry Potter stars of metro Detroit events this weekend
This weekend in metro Detroit, immerse yourself in a lakeside art show, live music performances, food and activities for the family. You might even encounter a Loch Ness monster and Harry Potter cosplayers at a couple of events.
Here are five things to do for the weekend of July 28-30:
Stony Creek Art Fair
This art fair produced by Integrity Shows will feature dozens of juried artists set in green fields adjacent to Stony Creek Lake. All items will be handmade by the exhibiting artists and will feature art for the home and garden, including ceramics, glass and garden arts, and wearable art including jewelry, fiber and accessories.
The highlight of this year’s show will be the building of a “life-size” Loch Ness monster rising out of the lake on Saturday by Detroit builders/artists Danielle Kaltz and Mike Willenborg.
Creative art projects and activities are planned with the help of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Anton Art Center, Adventure Crate, Detroit Public Theater and Methodist Children’s Group Homes.
On Sunday, there will be a Children’s Entrepreneurship Market that will feature young local entrepreneurs selling their goods and telling their stories.
Art fair hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday at Stony Creek Metropark, 4300 Main Park Drive in Shelby Township. A daily or annual Metropark pass for vehicles is required to enter the park. The daily pass is $10.
Sterlingfest Arts & Music Fair
This summer extravaganza will have live music across four stages, food, carnival rides, a kids' tent, more than 100 arts and crafts vendors, fireworks, a local authors' book sale and more.
The music lineup includes Steven Adler from Guns N Roses, Ann Wilson of Heart, Black Irish featuring Tosha Owens, Hip Hop Hooray and more.
10 a.m.-11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at Dodge Park, 40555 Utica Road in Sterling Heights.
Soul Day Detroit Festival
This third annual event in partnership with the Motown Museum and Northwestern High School returns to celebrate Detroit’s rich musical heritage and to uplift residents with live music, economic empowerment and family fun.
There will be performances by Charles and Gwen Scales, Notorious and Larry Lee, a musical experience presented by Motown Museum’s Hitsville Next, and local entrepreneurs will showcase food, products and services.

Noon-9 p.m. Saturday at Northwestern High School, 2200 W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit. Free.
Birmingham Day on the Town
Visit downtown Birmingham for a sidewalk sale and the community's biggest retail event of the year for the best deals and fun in the downtown area.
There will be more than 60 retailers, food trucks, family-fun activities, chalk art displays and more in stores and along streets and sidewalks.
Meaghan Mick from radio's Mojo in the Morning will broadcast live from 1-3 p.m. from the Channel 955 Ice Cream truck.
Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday in downtown Birmingham. Parking is free in structures during the event.
Harry Potter’s birthday celebration
Celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday, as the beloved character and his series of books and movies turn 26. Canterbury Village will be transformed into familiar scenes, including Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Hogsmeade Village, with dozens of roaming, costumed characters.
There will be costume contests, scavenger hunts, music and more.
Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Canterbury Village, 2357 Joslyn Court in Lake Orion. Tickets are $10 for ages 2 and up. Active members of the military, veterans and kids under 2 enter free.
