Last year local singer-songwriter Adrianna Noone got to join onstage one of her musical heroes and inspirations — Brandi Carlile.

Once wasn't enough. This year she again was one of the singers chosen from a bevy of entrants to sing a song alongside Carlile at the artist's annual "Mothership Weekend" festival at a seaside resort in Miramar Beach, Florida.

On Saturday at the festival Noone, whose voice is grounded in a subtle and emotional earnestness regardless of genre, performed Carlile's moving "Party of One" as Carlile accompanied on piano.

"It was the coolest thing all over again," Noone said in a telephone interview from Florida Tuesday, as she worried that approaching storms could impede a flight back to Rochester. (She was scheduled to perform at the Lilac Festival Wednesday and successfully returned in time.)

The second time doesn't mean that the nerves still don't get electric.

Last year Noone wondered whether the claims were true that Carlile would join her in song. Unsurprisingly, there was apprehensive anticipation, and Carlile was there for the performance, with guitar, alongside Noone.

This year, Noone, 26, knew that she would be with Carlile. Happy with her performance last year, her thoughts this year were, "I can't mess up this time."

She didn't — far from it.

Her performance, backed by rolling cello waves as well as Carlile's piano, honors Carlile's original while limning the song with Noone's own interpretation. The crowd responded enthusiastically, energetically.

The experience solidified Noone's impression of Carlile, who is known for her generosity with young up-and-coming artists as well as her gratitude to those who paved the way generations before. Carlile was instrumental in bringing folk legend Joni Mitchell back to the stage last year.

"I think a lot of people you idolize and always hope they're going to be as sweet as they seem onstage," said Noone, who again chatted with Carlile after the performance.

"That’s totally her," Noone said. "She's so kind."

Noone is not a stranger to joining big-name acts. Last month she opened for folk rocker Jade Bird in Vermont, and has also opened for Lyle Lovett, when he was accompanied by his multi-piece "Large Band."
