Local restaurant has 'Joe Burrow Billion Dollar Manwich.' Don't you dare call it 'sloppy'

On a recent Friday night at Dutch’s, in Hyde Park, owner Brad Bernstein let my wife, Amy, and me sample a Joe Burrow-inspired sandwich he was testing out for the Bengals vs. Browns game that coming Sunday.

He introduced a version of it at the Taste of the Bengals event, where – his wife, Rachael said – every Bengal had at least three or four of them each. Bernstein figured he was on to something.

I like the enthusiasm of area restaurants that are branding various menu items to show their excitement for Joey B and the Bengals in general. Of course, there's the Joe Burrow Steak & Lobster Tail at Jeff Ruby's. And based on my social media scrolling, I've noticed both the Dunlap Cafe, in Over-the-Rhine, and Sinners & Saints, on the East End, offer "Burrow burgers." Meanwhile, Poseidon's Pizza Company, in Florence, has a Joe Burrow-branded pizza.

At the Table: Hanky panky pizza and other food that brings me joy

The key ingredient in Bernstein's Joe Burrow-inspired creation will ring familiar to anyone who grew up having sloppy Joe nights at home in the 1980s: Hunt's Manwich Sauce.

Of course, this sandwich is no average Joe. Bernstein doctors the sauce with a medley of vegetables and locally produced Dude, Seriously hot sauce to give it some kick. He blends the sauce with house-made brisket, tops it with coleslaw and Grippo's barbecue chips and serves it on a sturdy brioche bun.

Rachael told Amy and me that she wanted to call the decadent pile of meat the "Sloppy Joe Burrow," but Amy disagreed, saying, "Joe Burrow is never sloppy!" In the end, Brad went with a far more laudatory name: “The Joe Burrow Billion Dollar Manwich."

Given the outcome of last Sunday's game, Rachael might've been right. But seeing how much our star quarterback has already done for his team and this city, he'll always be Cincinnati's main Manwich.
