Local News Anchor Pays Tribute to Fallen Rap Legend

On March 22, the rap community lost a legend when Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest passed away. The iconic group has a wide reach, and Mark Arum of Atlanta’s WSB-TV didn’t hesitate to pay tribute to Phife. As Arum gave the traffic report, he seamlessly integrated Tribe lyrics within the updates. He primarily quoted the Tribe songs “Award Tour,” off their 1993 album, Midnight Marauders, and “Check the Rhime,” from the 1991 record The Low End Theory.

Arum’s tribute is receiving wide coverage, and there have been several anchors before him who have received attention for doing the same kind of thing. It’s always a pleasant surprise when anchors throw in pop-culture references. Fellow WSB-TV Anchor Fred Blakenship also got in on the homage, and the two took us out with “Check the Rhime” and another track from Midnight Marauders, “Oh My God.”
