HOPEWELL / COLONIAL HEIGHTS — Two local musicians will join country-folk singer-songwriter Oliver Anthony on his "Out of the Woods" 2024 World Tour which kicks off in Sweden in February. Australia is one of the 40-plus stops. How cool is that?

The only Virginia stop on the tour is at Meadow Event Park in Doswell for Atlantic Union Bank After Hours on Friday, May 17. Viral sensation Oliver Anthony, Joey Davis of Hopewell and Caleb Dillard of Colonial Heights will perform at the SERVPRO Pavilion.

Anthony whose legal name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford made history this year for his song "Rich Men North of Richmond" which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He is the first artist who reached the top spot without previously having a song on the chart.

"At this point, I’ll gladly go by Oliver because everyone knows me as such. But my friends and family still call me Chris. You can decide for yourself, either is fine," Anthony stated on his website.

"Rich Men North of Richmond" has been dubbed the nation's "blue-collar anthem" because it resonates powerfully with Americans from all walks of life around the world. The high school dropout "never wanted to be a full-time musician, much less sit at the top of the iTunes charts."

This country music fan happened to be on vacation when Anthony's song went viral. It drove me crazy not to be able to write about the Prince Edward County resident's success. However, I did catch their recent performance in Farmville, Anthony's hometown, at Longwood University's Joan Perry Brock Center. I shared my experience in my December Social Butterfly column.

Anthony announced his tour on social media platforms with a comical video where he is asleep in his camper. In a dream, he shows up a month late for work and a fan asks him to autograph a box of Fudge Rounds.

Dillard who performed dressed as a banana in Farmville shared the tour dates on Facebook. He posted, "Catch me out there opening and on the bass fiddle with the fellas. I cannot thank Oliver Anthony and Joey Davis enough for having me. It’s been an incredible ride so far and still doesn’t even feel real. Love y’all so much. See ya out there folks!"

Joey Davis posted the concert tour dates also which prompted Gregory Vaughan to comment, "Damn Joey, getting big son. I was just talking to Cricket the other day about going to see you play in Petersburg or somewhere, but it looks like you’re going to be too busy for any hometown shows. Lol." Davis replied, "I'll be around!"

Tickets to Anthony's "Out of the Woods" concert in Doswell run $25 - $45. Visit oliveranthonymusic.com, afterhoursconcertseries.com or call 1-800-514-ETIX [3849] to grab yours before they're gone. The concert is rain or shine, and refunds will not be given.
