In recognition of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month the Polk County chapter of the American Bikers Aimed Towards Education Florida, Inc. is hosting its 11th annual Skills on Wheels Motorcycle Rodeo.

Mayor Bill Mutz presented the chapter with a proclamation on May 2 declaring May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. The organization also received a proclamation from Governor Ron DeSantis.

“We promote legislation with the state legislators to ask for better awareness laws like promoting the Vulnerable Road Users (Safety) Act,” said ABATE's public relations officer Holly Kallister.

Kallister said using the excuse of not seeing a motorcyclist is “by the wayside.”

“We are trying to train the public in watching and being aware of motorcycles," said Kallister. "So many accidents occur and the driver says, ‘well I didn’t see them coming.’ Motorcycles have the same rights on the road as a vehicle only we’re smaller.”

The rodeo is scheduled for Saturday at Boondocks Bar located at 8515 US Highway 98 North in Lakeland. The event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A $5 donation covers event entry and participation. Registration ends at 1 p.m.
