Jillian Michaels Popped Off

While The Biggest Loser's Jillian Michaels was on the Buzzfeed morning show AM2DM on Wednesday, she made some controversial comments regarding Lizzo's weight. She said:

"Why are we celebrating her body? Why does it matter? Why aren't we celebrating her music? 'Cause it isn't gonna be awesome if she gets diabetes."

Lizzo has some passionate fans who were up in arms over Michaels' commentary, and Twitter was torn apart between people who agreed with Michaels' opinion and those who pointed out that Lizzo puts on wildly athletic concerts with ease, so maybe step off.

Michaels Followed Up

After the furor, Michaels released a statement on social media explaining her words and doubling down on her opinion.

"As I’ve stated repeatedly, we are all beautiful, worthy, and equally deserving. I also feel strongly that we love ourselves enough to acknowledge that there are serious healthy consequences that come with obesity – heart disease, diabetes, cancer to name only a few. I would never wish these for ANYONE and I would hope we prioritize our health because we LOVE ourselves and our bodies."

Lizzo Responded On Instagram

Lizzo also responded to the outcry, but she did it in an incredibly classy way. She didn't drag Michaels by name or lash out. Instead, she showed how far she has come and encouraged her followers on Instagram to love themselves and to be kind to themselves.

"At the 25 second mark I want you to take 5 deep breaths… in through the nose… out through the mouth.. today’s mantra is: This is my life. I have done nothing wrong. I forgive myself for thinking I was wrong in the first place. I deserve to be happy."

Lizzo Is Going To Be Just Fine

Lizzo has spoken at length how hard it has been for her to accept herself when the world has such a narrow view of what is beautiful. She told Elle:

"I take self-love very seriously. And I take it seriously because when I was younger, I wanted to change everything about myself. I didn’t love who I was. And the reason I didn’t love who I was is because I was told I wasn’t lovable by the media, by [people at] school, by not seeing myself in beauty ads, by not seeing myself in television...by lack of representation. My self-hatred got so bad that I was fantasizing about being other people. But you can’t live your life trying to be somebody else. What’s the point?"

Lizzo has gone on to start a pretty radical self-love movement, so she's going to be just fine. She is also currently touring in Australia and took some time to volunteer for those affected by the wildfires, so she's putting love out into the world instead of focusing on people who want to bring her down.
