Lizzo and Her Flute Make For One of the Best Tiny Desk Concerts of All Time
For a lot of artists, an NPR Tiny Desk concert is an opportunity to show their talents off in an intimate, acoustic setting. Unfortunately, Lizzo’s Tiny Desk concert could be the last for a while because there’s no way the walls are still standing after her three-song set. The 31-year-old singer hopped behind that now-famous “tiny ass desk” and kicked things off by belting “Cuz I Love You” with flawless execution.
With only a four-piece backing band, Lizzo performed “Truth Hurts” and “Juice” along with her opening number, and yes—the flute does come out for an incredible solo on “Juice.” Just like the album‘s lead track, Lizzo’s opening on “Cuz I Love You” shows off her incredible vocal talents. Actually, in the personal setting of the NPR performance, it's her insane vocals that are the real star of the show. Back up dancers and choreography are great, but this is proof of just how gifted the rapper and singer is. And if that’s not a Jennifer Holliday throwback at the end of “Cuz I Love You,” it’s the most spot-on accidental impression ever.

With Grammy nominations just around the corner, Lizzo is on track to finish her biggest year to date with more than a few nominations. And after watching the Tiny Desk performance, we’d be all the more fortunate to get another stripped-down acoustic take for the big night—just make sure that flute is within arm’s reach. Amen.
