Lizzo celebrates Saturday Night Live milestone with an inspirational throwback
Lizzo has plenty of reasons to feel good as hell this holiday.
The singer, who is currently up for eight Grammys (the most of any artist this year) and was just named one of EW’s Entertainers of the Year, closed out 2019 on a high note with a showstopping performance in her first-ever musical guest spot on Saturday Night Live this weekend — and she’s taking a moment to celebrate how far she’s come.
“On the left was when I worked for liberty taxes, as a sign spinner… on the right is my @nbcsnl debut,” the singer tweeted on Monday with a photo of herself wearing a Statue of Liberty costume as a sign spinner alongside her SNL promo art, in which she appears as a slightly more high-fashion interpretation of Lady Liberty. “Don’t stop… we need you,” she encouraged fans in the tweet. “Your time is coming.”

The past 12 months have made the rapper-singer-flautist a household name, but that doesn’t mean she’s an overnight success. “Everybody says that and I’m like, ‘It took 10 years to get to this point!’” she said in her EW Entertainer of the Year cover story. “But it’s cool, y’all are going to discover my discography, dig deeper. You’re gonna see some pictures of me back when I was wearing $20 wigs.”
The SNL show came after Lizzo was forced to cancel two performances in the week leading up to it due to a bad case of the flu. “Y’all I’ve never been this sick please pray for me,” she tweeted just five days before taking the stage in Studio 8H. She overcame the illness, though, in time to deliver killer performances of “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell” as part of the Eddie Murphy-hosted episode.
This year also brought Lizzo’s first film role, in Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers. “I was in a good-ass movie and I’m proud of that — a fire-ass movie, and I hope it gets all the Academy Awards so I can go to the Oscars,” she told EW. Time will tell if that wish comes true, or whether she’ll pick up any Grammys next month. But whatever happens, Lizzo is ready to enter the “roaring ‘20s” on a high. “I think that my 2019 really set me up for the next decade,” she said. If only her sign-spinner self could see her now!
