'Lizzie' trailer: Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny star in reimagined Lizzie Borden movie with sexy twist

This is not the Lizzie Borden story you remember.

Lizzie, which is directed by Craig William Macneill from a script by Bryce Kass, reimagines the notorious accused axe-murderer and takes considerable fictional liberties with the real-life source material.

Chloë Sevigny is the movie’s star opposite Kristen Stewart, who plays a housemaid named Bridget working in the Borden family home in Fall River, Mass. Stewart’s character greatly sympathizes with the plight of Lizzie, who suffers at the hands of her father (Jamey Sheridan) and stepmother (Fiona Shaw) — in large part because the former seems to be a bird-killing, physically abusive tyrant.

The affection between Sevigny and Stewart is clear in the trailer, released on Friday, just ahead of the anniversary of the infamous crime, which took place on Aug. 4, 1892. The feelings quickly morph into a forbidden romance, which the clip — full of menacing imagery and an equally ominous score — suggests is the final motivating force behind the decision by Lizzie and Bridget to team up and do away with the Borden parents. (Lizzie was tried and acquitted of the crime.)

The film debuted to solid reviews at January’s Sundance Film Festival. Co-starring Kim Dickens, Jay Huguley and Denis O’Hare, Lizzie premieres in theaters on Sept. 14.
